THE 339 COMMUNITY
The 339 Manumissions and Beyond Project is a faith-inspired passion-driven historical initiative led by Avis Wanda McClinton of Pennsylvania. Avis Wanda has dedicated her life to honoring and amplifying the voices of enslaved individuals once held by Quakers. At the heart of this project lie powerful and essential questions:
-
What happened to these individuals once they were manumitted?
-
Did they go on to build their families and communities?
-
Did the Quakers maintain relationships with them after their emancipation?
Our diverse and committed group includes Christians, members of the Religious Society of Friends, also known as Quakers, African Americans, White Americans, and many other world wide nationalities, all united in a shared mission: to uncover and tell the untold stories of those who were freed.
We proudly collaborate with Genealogists, academic institutions, churches, and Quaker meetinghouses across the United States, all working together with a deep, vested interest in understanding and developing the story of this vital part of American history.
We invite like-minded individuals with a passion for history—particularly the history of enslaved Africans and African Americans—to join our growing community. Your voice, your skills, and your heart are welcome here.
Come be a part of this transformative journey. Help us honor the lives, legacies, and resilience of those once silenced.
